Alumni Spotlight präsentiert herausragende Forschungsleistungen und besondere Auszeichnungen der Mitglieder des Alumni Clubs. Bei der ersten Ausgabe des neuen Formats am 23. Juni 2022 war Erwin Wagner, Biochemiker und Genforscher, anlässlich seiner Aufnahme in die National Academy of Sciences (USA) zu Gast.

Im Gespräch mit Georg Stingl, Professor Emeritus für Dermatologie an der Medizinischen Universität Wien, berichtete Wagner über wichtige Stationen seiner Karriere in Heidelberg, Philadelphia, Madrid und Wien. Er erzählte von Meilensteinen seiner Forschungstätigkeit ebenso wie über den Ausgleich, den er beim Bergsteigen in Asien und Südamerika findet.

 

Alumni Spotlight presents outstanding research achievements and special awards by members of the Alumni Club. At the first edition of the new format on June 23, 2022, Erwin Wagner, biochemist and genetic researcher, was a guest on the occasion of his induction into the National Academy of Sciences (USA).

In conversation with Georg Stingl,  Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at the Medical University of Vienna, Wagner talked about important career stages in Heidelberg, Philadelphia, Madrid and Vienna. He reported on milestones in his research activities as well as on his mountain climbing trips in Asia and South America that let him find the necessary balance between research and recreation.

Erwin Wagner ist einer der führenden Biochemiker und Genforscher auf dem Gebiet der Krebsbiologie und Tumorentwicklung. Seine Studien konzentrieren sich auf den Bereich der Genfunktion in gesunden und pathologischen Zuständen. Er untersucht die Funktionen von Transkriptionsfaktorkomplexen, die die Zellproliferation, -differenzierung und -onkogenese sowie das Übersprechen zwischen Organen sowohl bei Mäusen als auch beim Menschen regulieren.

2021 wurde er als International Member in die National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in den USA aufgenommen.

Wagner studierte Technische Chemie an der Universität Graz. Seine Forschungstätigkeit führte ihn unter anderem an das Max-Planck-Institut für molekulare Genetik in Berlin, das Labor von Manfred Schweiger an der Universität Innsbruck, sowie das Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, USA. Nach seiner Habilitation 1983 an der Universität Innsbruck wurde er Gruppenleiter am European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. Ab 1988 arbeitete Wagner am Forschungsinstituts für Molekulare Pathologie (IMP) in Wien, dessen stellvertretender Direktor er von 1997-2008 war. 2008 wurde Wagner stellvertretender Direktor und Leiter des Cancer Cell Biology Program am Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid, Spanien. Seit 2019 ist er als Gruppenleiter an der Universitätsklinik für Dermatologie und am Klinischen Institut für Labormedizin an der Medizinischen Universität Wien tätig.

 

Erwin Wagner is one of the leading biochemists and geneticists in the field of cancer biology and tumor development. His studies focus on the field of gene function in healthy and pathological states. He studies the functions of transcription factor complexes that regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and oncogenesis, as well as crosstalk between organs in both mice and humans. In 2021, he was inducted as an International Member into the National Academy of Sciences in the United States.

 

Wagner studied technical chemistry at the University of Graz. His research activities took him to the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, the laboratory of Manfred Schweiger at the University of Innsbruck, and the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, USA, among others. After his habilitation in 1983 at the University of Innsbruck, he became a group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. From 1988, Wagner worked at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, where he was deputy director from 1997-2008. In 2008, Wagner became deputy director and head of the Cancer Cell Biology Program at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid, Spain. In 2019, he joined the University Department of Dermatology and the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna as group leader.
